HARRY VAN DE BOSPOORT - CIRCLE IN A CIRCLE
WITH CIRCLE, THUS CIRCLES, CIRCLING, CIRCLED

nationality: UK

duration: 2'36"

made in: 2012

previous screenings: Tribeca Cinemas, New York, USA, 2013

biography:

Currently working towards a BA in Intermedia Art at Edinburgh College of Art, I am a multimedia artist with work ranging through video, installation and urban intervention. I have had an increasing interest in language, particularly jargon and semantics; recently using my own writing to dictate my working process and form the basis of my practice.

synopsis:

Similar to the Zoetrope popularised in the 1860’s, the work’s optical play is produced from the rotation of a merry-go-round in a childrens park. This movement creates a strobey video comprised of 648,000 circles; circles within circles, within circles. Zoetrope, derived from Greek, meaning ‘wheel of life’ relates to the audio accompanying the piece in which a female voice recites a passage from Ilexa Yardley’s ‘The Circular Theory’. The perception of enlightenment inherent in Yardley’s theory of the circle’s apparent ability to define and explain “everything and anything, past, present, future” is an interesting standing within humanities continuing struggle towards life’s purpose.
